CALM Clothes: Creating A Simple, Calm Collection

Writer's picture: The Calm MummyThe Calm Mummy

Is your wardrobe:

  1. filled with clothes which you don't like

  2. filled with clothes you can't wear

  3. filled with clothes which don't suit you

  4. empty

  5. none of the above - you just don't care about it.

No matter the state of your wardrobe, or your attitude towards it, it's likely you are not alone!

Women tend to hold a lot of emotions in their clothes; perhaps it's an item we bought for the first date with our now-husband, that dress we bought when we hit our target weight, that hideously expensive bag we bought with our first pay cheque after our promotion etc. As such, we can end up holding on to clothes which either no longer suit us, fit us or fail to work with our busy-mummy lifestyle.

We can end up losing our way and feel like our bulging wardrobe is empty. The next step from there is either finding ourselves manically buying new clothes all the time or else no longer caring at all and wearing the same leggings every day.

We can end up losing our way and feel like our bulging wardrobe is empty.

One surefire way to create a wardrobe which suits and fits us is to rebuy the whole thing...but this can be expensive, impractical and far from calming!

My first top tip is to always purchase strategically and always buy from charity shops. You can find the most marvellous finds when rooting around the rails of your local thrift store, and with just a few choice pieces you can overhaul your wardrobe in no time.

First Things First

Know your size! Don't buy for One Fine Day sizing when you reach that goal weight...buy for now.

Consider what you feel most comfortable in...then buy the opposite. Stepping out your comfort zone will refresh your wardrobe in seconds. For example, if you are always in jeans, then look for silk midi dresses which you can wear with your usual loose knit jumpers and trainers. That way you don't need to buy everything new; you are just styling what you already own in a different way.

Choose a colour palette. If you love a rainbow of colours, then go for a matching hue such as pastels because all pastel colours suit one another and won't be too overwhelming when worn together. I love golds, silvers, browns, rose, creams etc

Choose something which will add a POP. I love love love animal print. You may prefer stripes, geometric patterns, embellishments, leather etc.

Next Up

Then pull out items which fit into each of these criteria. See where you are missing pieces - perhaps you don't have enough tops, or any items which add the base tones or the POP...then head to your nearest charity shop. Give yourself a budget if you are worried about overspending and only go in with that. Just one amazing new piece can change your style and wardrobe.

The reason we do all this is to make it easier to choose clothes in the morning without feeling overwhlemed with choice (or mess), help you feel great in your clothes without you needing to totally change who you are just to suit the latest fashion or stress yourself out by spending hundreds on a new wardrobe of clothes.

You can then do a number of things with this capsule collection to create your CALM Wardrobe, but more on this to come.
